LAMS activity managment system now have a hosting service called "LessonLAMS" that allows educators to gain free access to LAMS (including the Activity Planner) to use with a class of up to 30 students.

LessonLAMS provides interfaces to simply the process of creating and launching LAMS lessons with a class. LessonLAMS provides a free "Cloud-style" service for educators to get started with using LAMS in a matter of minutes. A Premium version of LessonLAMS for more than one class or more than 30 students will be available in the near future for a modest fee.

Free online course for educators on open ed stuff

Open content licensing for educators is a free online workshop designed for educators and students who want to learn more about open education resources, copyright, and creative commons licenses.

The course materials were developed as a collaborative project by volunteers from the OER Foundation, WikiEducator, theOpenCourseWare Consortium and Creative Commons with funding support from UNESCO. The course will provide prerequisite knowledge required by educators to legally remix open education materials and help institutions to take informed decisions about open content licenses.

This free workshop is sponsored by Ako Aotearoa, a strategic partner member of the OER Foundation and scheduled for 23 - 27 January 2012.

Governments in Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the US have all adopted Creative Commons licenses
Its not just publications, research, theses and other content that is going open, 2011 was the year that open pedagogies including Massively Open Online Courses (MOOC)
Museums and libraries are going open. Check out the Commons on Flickr to see how libraries and museums are openly sharing what have been hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives,
I think of open textbooks as low hanging fruit. One of the most compelling open education initiatives to undertake. Open textbooks have a clear value proposition for students, parents, educators and public funders.
While I’m interested in the full range of ways in which open principles are being used I’m particularly interested in how they apply to education. Governments could establish policy that requires public funds for education to result in education resources openly accessible to the public.
People who tweet and use social networks appreciate openly engaging others in solving problems or providing advice..... As might be expected there are a growing number of practices and technologies emerging to support this kind of open engagement
Idea Scale is another interesting example. The recently launched US initiative Digital Promise is using Idea Scale to generate and tackle “grand challenges”
Wayne Mackintosh and the Open Educational Resource Foundation (OERF) in New Zealand have been doing just an amazing job of bringing to life the OER university (OERu). The OER university is a virtual collaboration of like-minded institutions committed to creating flexible pathways for OER learners to gain formal academic credit.

"The second keynote speaker at the SVEA Final Conference was professor Gráinne Conole, professor of Learning Innovation at the University of Leicester (UK). Title of her presentation was “Pandora’s Box – the Implications of New Social and Participatory Media”. Professor Conole highlighted the changing educational context of today:

•    The rapidly changing technological environment
•    The new digital literacy skills needed for learners and
teachers
•    The new emerging open practices
•    The new forms of online community and interactivity

Adopting new so-called e-pedagogies in education gives the learner a new experience but also leads to new paradoxes concerning the teachers:
•    New technologies are not extensively used
•    There is a lack of uptake of OER
•    There is little use beyond the early adopted
•    Despite the rhetoric and funding there is little evidence of transformation.

To overcome this paradox professor Conole stressed the importance of implementing open practices in all steps of education, not only for students but also for teachers.
In her concluding remarks she focused on the way to evolve from ‘closed practices’ to ‘open practices’ and the advantages from these open practices:

•    Open, participatory and social media enable new forms of communication and collaboration •    Communities in these spaces are complex and distributed
•    Learners and teachers need to develop new digital literacy skills to harness their potential
•    We need to rethink how we design, support and assess learning
•    Open, participatory and social media can provide mechanisms for us to share and discuss
teaching and research ideas in new ways
•    We are seeing a blurring of boundaries: teachers/learners, teaching/research, real/virtual
spaces, formal/informal modes of communication and publication"

"To address the need for openness of platforms, algorithms and ensure that the learning process remains a key focus, a group of us have proposed the development of an open learning analytics architecture/platform. We’ve posted our (beta) vision online: Open Learning Analytics: an integrated & modularized platform (.pdf). We are interested in hearing from, and partnering with, others – researchers, educators, universities, schools, startups, and corporate partners (learning and development departments). We have submitted several grant applications and have a few more that will be submitted in the next six months (one early response chastised us for being “too ambitious”. I solidly reject that assertion. Why is it that corporate entities can have ambitious plans but researchers are expected to think in isolated minutiae? Researchers need to think in systems and platforms in order to have an impact)."

UOW has become a founding member and formal partner of OER University, exciting times in providing access to students in the region, across Australia and around the world to high quality University Education resources and courses

UOW initial planned contribution to the OERu logic model

Open curriculum: Our proposed course for the open BA is jointly run by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law. "Community, Power and the Common Good" practises what it preaches by allowing free participation in a course being run for fee-paying students and by involving international community leaders in its teaching team. As a pilot in summer session it enrolled 30 fee-paying students and 100 additional students in blended modes of online and f2f at all UOW campuses.

Open design and open pedagogy: UOW has a 10 year history of educational research in learning design. The proposed course is based not only on open content but also on open dialogue and debate between students, academics and community leaders. We are interested in exploring with other OERu members, the sustainability issues around this design.

At the University of Missouri, a leaked classroom video that went viral and triggered an uproar on conservative media has prompted what may be the first restrictions on students recording lectures since the advent of portable tape recorders more than 50 years ago. Under the new policy, students must first obtain written permission from their professors and classmates.

"The proposed policy notes that "unauthorised distribution of such materials is a violation of academic standards and may violate copyright and/or privacy rights." Students and professors who violate the policy could face university disciplinary sanctions.

The EQUELLA application is a UOW content repository internally known as the Resource Centre. The Resource Centre is organised into institutional collections one of which is an open access collection titled Share World.

The purpose of the Share World collection is to share teaching and learning resources publicly for non- commercial purposes.

A resource may only be contributed to Share World if it is UOW Teaching Material or external/joint resources and all authors or creators of the resource have agreed to share the resource publicly under the terms of a specified Creative Commons Australia licence. No other resources may be contributed, including UOW Administration Material.

Only UOW employees can contribute to Share World and they must familiarise themselves with UOW policies and technical and legal responsibilities before making a contribution.

Harvesting

To enable public access, Share World metadata is harvested to an open access repository hosted by Pearson-EQUELLA. The hosted environment is titled Content Without Borders (CWB). Harvested metadata is displayed in CWB and Item Summary and resource links point to a UOW server.

The Harvester is set up as a scheduled task to harvest items within 24 hours of contribution and checks for new items in Share World since the last harvest. If a new item is added to Shared World today it will be harvested tonight and the age of the item will be referenced as today inside CWB.

If an item is edited in Share World, that item title will remain the same in CWB as the day it was harvested, however the link back to the item will always be to the latest version and content of that item, including description and attachments.

The Harvester will only pick up ‘live’ items and ignore draft, archived or suspended items or items stored in My Content.

Contributors to Share World must accept a contribution agreement to save an item to the collection. Details of the agreement are provided in the attached Glossary under the heading ‘Agreement – Contributor’.

End-user

Before Share World items can be viewed in CWB, end-users must accept a licence agreement that sets out the terms and conditions for the use of attached resources. Details of the licence agreement are provided in the attached Glossary under the heading ‘Agreement – End-user’.

Remove duplicate items

If an item’s title has been edited since harvesting, then the item will appear in CWB as two items, one with the initial title and a new item with the edited title. It is the item owner’s responsibility to report duplicated items by submitting a support request (see technical support for details). Duplicated items will be deleted from CWB and a re-harvest activated.

Contributors

(a) Must be a UOW staff member, but not necessarily the item owner or the resource author.

(b) Must familiarise themselves with UOW Authorship, Intellectual Property, Copyright and Privacy policies and technical and legal responsibilities before making a contribution to the Resource Centre.

(c) May Contribute external resources on behalf of a UOW student or someone from another organisation providing appropriate consents have been obtained and UOW policies and technical and legal responsibilities have been met.

Open Course Library Launches 1st 42 Courses

On Monday, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) released the first 42 of the state’s high-enrollment 81 Open Course Library courses. The remaining 39 courses will be finished by 2013. Funded by the Washington State Legislature and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Open Course Library joins the global open educational resources (OER) movement, and adheres to SBCTC’s open policy, which requires that all materials created through system grants be openly licensed for the public to freely use, adapt and distribute.

All courses are available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 unported license (CC-BY).

The first 42 courses are available in multiple technical formats including:

It is widely accepted that the success of higher education institutions is dependent on effective competent leaders and leadership. There is also growing evidence to support the proposition that emotional intelligence is strongly linked to effective leadership in the higher education setting. Additionally, the premise that emotional intelligence can influence an individual’s job satisfaction is well supported. This book details the findings from an explicit examination of the relevance and interrelationships between emotional intelligence, leadership practice and job satisfaction in a higher education context. A mixed mode case study approach comprising eleven cases was used to investigate four research questions. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected through interviews, surveys and a parametric test designed to assess individuals’ emotional intelligence. Twelve emotional intelligence capabilities articulating the relevance of emotional intelligence for effective leadership in higher education is presented as is a model illustrating the specific elements and interelationships between job satisfaction, emotional intelligence and effective leadership. Finally, a framework for developing emotionally intelligent leadership capacity in higher education is outlined.

Dominique Parrish founded Learning Achievements and Solutions, a small business that contracts to small and medium enterprises in tertiary institutions. She has recently taken up a role in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Wollongong as the Director of Learning, Teaching and the Student Experience.

Trover, a free mobile app for exploring places through photos, has launched an Android version after a good start on iOS in July. The Seattle-based startup is focused on what it calls "spatial browsing." Trover is a photo-sharing app that arranges discoveries on a map, so that users can either explore sights right around them or browse places around the world.

"Most of the apps out there today that are location-specific are delivering lists of content back to the user," says CEO Jason Karas. "We feel that exploring a space is not really done best through lists, that it's done through information that's organized in a spatial way. You can literally stroll around with our UI and take in the neighborhood just like you would when you're walking around."

Virtual University collaboration in second life

You are invited to participate in a first of a kind event, an in-world mixture of conference, workshop and collaboration, to discuss, design, build, operate and evaluate various virtual teaching and learning spaces for the university environment of the twenty first century.

This unique event will begin with an intensive two day in-world meeting that will consist of a series of plenary talks, small group discussions and report back sessions, workshops, tutorials, demonstrations and tours.

Over the following 4 weeks some of the main ideas and concepts for virtual teaching, learning and meeting spaces developed by participants will be constructed on the new virtual university island (with assistance from professional SL builders). Then over the next 3 months participants will be able to book and use these spaces for their own teaching and learning sessions, role plays and meetings. During this time there will be informal follow-up and evaluation meetings. Traditional conferences last a few days and allow for ideas to be presented and for some follow-up discussion to occur.

Standard workshops and tutorials often last a few hours or a day and while they often demonstrate and talk about skills they don't usually allow from much practice, testing or feedback on new ideas. We intend this new style of collaborative event to take the best of these traditional formats and add in the time and the facilities for extended collaboration which will see ideas put into practice and at least some preliminary evaluations undertaken. We plan to repeat the collaboration (ANZVUC2) in March 2012 with the idea refining and extending the ideas and creations of first event.

The plan is to have the virtual university island(s) as an ongoing collaborative and space to allow for construction and testing of applications of virtual world technologies to university teaching and learning.

On the day we will also be featuring a hands-on workshop on Slowmation (a simplified way to make animation), led by Associate Professor Garry Hoban of the Faculty of Education, University of Wollongong , which will provide practical skills in a powerful learning and teaching technique and allow us to reflect on the learning processes involved in student-generated mLearning.

Do you have an idea that will enhance your teaching and support student learning?

Would you like help to develop the program or resources?

If yes, consider submitting an application for a Faculty Service Agreement (FSA). We support Faculty Service Agreements projects at no cost, with the exception of consumables (eg multiple burning of DVD’s, printing of booklets etc), or where there is a direct cost (eg transport to off campus locations).

The FSA links Faculty Learning and Teaching priorities with staff expertise from CEDiR (Centre for Educational Development, Innovation and Recognition); CASR (Centre for Academic Systems and Resources) and LIFT (Learning, Innovation, Facilities and Technology). Examples of some of the projects which may be undertaken include assistance for eTeaching, flexible and multi-location teaching (including assessment or subject / curriculum redesign); video production; animation; graphic design; web design; database development and staff development.

The priority in 2012 is likely to be those FSA’s which aim to support staff in the implementation of sound pedagogical approaches utilising the new Learning Management System (UOW eLearning Space). There is still scope, however, for projects involving production, including animation, database development and video production to be undertaken as part of the FSA process.

Sakai OAE can be used in hybrid with Sakai CLE (the 2.x series) to provide an excellent learning and teaching experience beyond that of the traditional LMS.

"It is refreshing to read a report on the use of digital technologies in education that doesn't frame the issue in generational terms. Emerging Practice in a Digital Age provides a very useful and interesting summary of 10 case studies of emerging practice using digital technologies in British higher education. Terms such as digital native, millennial learner, or net generation are nowhere to be found in this document. Instead, the drivers of change identified are: increased personalization and choice, developing new markets and economic pressures.

The 10 case studies are organized into three themes:
1. Working in partnership with students
2. Developing students' employability potential
3. Preparing for the future

The report cautions:
"in our enthusiasm to embrace the new we should not assume that ownership of new technologies and the apparent fluency with which they are used in daily life implies knowledge of how to use them effectively to support learning. We need a better understanding of the digital literacies that students and staff need to take advantage of the new opportunities, and we need to integrate these in our programmes of study and continuing professional development."

Indiana U mobile app built on the Kuali mobile framework

Following close on the June 2011 launch of a consortium-supported open source platform for campus mobility, Indiana University has replaced the software it uses to deliver information services to mobile devices. Version 2.0 of IU Mobile has been built using Kuali Mobility Enterprise, software created by a consortium of universities and companies.

The new mobile framework used by Indiana U is the product of a Kuali Foundation open source project. Participants also included theUniversity of Cambridge, Cornell, andU Michigan, as well as vendors HTC Global Services and VivanTech.

The Bloomington institution first offered a mobile platform in 2009, built on the open source MIT Mobile Web framework. That initial edition, which catered to mobile Web, included bus schedules, news, events, maps, a people directory, computer labs availability, and a feedback function. The following year Indiana U released a version for Apple's iOS devices, which was followed a few months later by a Google Android release.

The latest edition includes support for "My Classes," a mashup of student data with Sakai's Oncourse, an online collaboration and learning environment. Also, with the new release, each Indiana U campus can tailor its information channels, and all previous IU Mobile services--including athletics scores, class schedules, course content, and bus routes--will be accessible through the new service. The new system will simplify the process that lets users add services to their mobile devices.

One of the recommended actions for UOW arising out of the Assessment Benchmarking Project was to ‘share good practice and tools to support fair assessment of individual contributions to group work’. To invigorate the discussion around assessment of groupwork, Professor Tim McCarthy, on behalf of the Assessment Working Group, has invited Associate Professor Mark Freeman from the University of Sydney Business School to facilitate a workshop next week.

This workshop is particularly relevant for staff engaged in setting and assessing groupwork or in advising and consulting on the design of student assessment. It will cover a number of strategies and tools which promote good team behaviour and help to make the assessment fair. It builds on the ideas discussed in the lunchtime seminar that precedes it which focuses on groupwork in large classes. You are welcome to attend the lunchtime seminar (1.00-2.00 pm in 32.G01) and do not have to RSVP for the lunchtime seminar.

Before Mark’s current secondment to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) as Discipline Scholar (Business, Management and Economics), Mark was Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) and Director Learning and Teaching at the University of Sydney Business School.

His recent roles include leading the ALTC’s Learning and Teaching Academic Standards project for business and the national scoping study of business higher education challenges, project leader for several national collaborative ALTC funded projects including Embedding the Development of Intercultural Competence in Business Education, member of the OECD Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes project expert group for economics.

It is essential that if you have copied an eLearning site from a previous session (or year) that you alter the due dates and cut off dates to reflect the current session dates.

It is good practice to have the assignment cut off date a month after the due date. You will be able to see when the students have submitted, and if they were late, but the later cut off date allows for contingencies such as requests for extensions, etc, so the students will still be able to submit.

For assistance changing the dates of your assignments / assessments, or you would like an educational design consultation to discuss pedagogical practices, please call x 3683 (eTeaching support)

Remember that if you have used selective release by date that you will also need to change those dates to reflect the current session.

Interestingly I stumbled upon this post about analystics, as I read it I pondered the role of the learner, the learning environment and the place of knowledge recognition (sometimes institutions). I wonder if there is a role for agreed structures within an Open Educational framework?

Pedagogy and the Learning Analytics model

I received valuable feedback on the proposed design framework for Learning Analytics. A key question people asked was where pedagogy was in the model. Here is how I see it:

Pedagogic strategies and learning activities as such are not part of the analytics process but are implicitly contained in the input datasets that encapsulate the pedagogic behaviour of users. As we know, this behaviour depends a great deal on the platform and the pedagogic vision the developers built in (cf. Dron & Anderson, 2011). For example, data from a content sharing platform will have a behaviourist/cognitivist pedagogy attached to the learner behaviour, since this is the pedagogic model underlying the technology. In any case, only the pedagogic patterns exhibited in the dataset can be analysed and this will vary.

Starting next week, SpongeBob SquarePants will come to Twitter with a story specially made for the micro-blogging platform. Here's the pitch from Nickelodeon: "The Ice Race Cometh: A Twitter-Tale, was conceived and developed for Twitter by the SpongeBob SquarePants writing team and will run from Tuesday, July 12, to Friday, July 15. The story will be told via multiple tweets and images throughout each day to set scenes and advance the action involving SpongeBob and his friends as they prepare for The Bikini Bottom Great Sleigh Race." Tune in, or retweet, or something......

SpongeBob is quite a latecomer to Twitter in that regard, and an awfully commercial one at that. As more companies and brands start to broadcast their stories on Twitter, it may be that the noise becomes overbearing and the format dull. But in the meantime, we've seen a number of innovative uses of Twitter for storytelling. The works of James Joyce and Shakespeare have been retold in short snippets, for example, and artists like Neil Gaiman and Tim Burton have utilized Twitter for collaborative storytelling projects, engaging other users in helping create new stories, 140 characters at a time.

Twitter is well-suited for that. Thanks to the public nature of the service and of course to thehashtag, anyone can easily add a line to a story - an online version of the Surrealists' exquisite corpse game, where users can contribute one line, without any clear sense of where others plan to take the narrative. Crowdsourcing creativity, if you will.

Social Networks Adapting Pedagogical Practice SNAPP

SNAPP is a software tool that allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from discussion forum posts and replies. The network visualisations of forum interactions provide an opportunity for teachers to rapidly identify patterns of user behaviour – at any stage of course progression. SNAPP has been developed to extract all user interactions from various commercial and open source learning management systems (LMS) such as BlackBoard (including the former WebCT), and Moodle. SNAPP is compatible for both Mac and PC users and operates in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.

Most of the student data generated from Learning Management Systems (LMS) include reports on the number of sessions (log-ins), dwell time (how long the log-in lasted) and number of downloads. This tells us a lot about content retrieval in a transmission model of learning and teaching, but not about how students are interacting with each other in more socio-constructivist practice. Discussion forum activity is a good indicator of student interactions and is systemically captured by most LMS. SNAPP uses information on who posted and replied to whom, and what major discussions were about, and how expansive they were, to analyse the interactions of a forum and display it in a Social Network Diagram. The following figures illustrate how SNAPP re-interprets discussion forum postings into a network diagram.

A little reminder to request your eLearning sites for session 2 (Spring) 2011. Although you may have had a site last year, the site needs to be requested each session, this ensures that the appropriate cohort of students get access to the site.

If you have already requested your site for session 2, 2011, and are uploading the new subject outline etc, please be aware that the 2010 (and Autumn 2011) sites will still be visible to you. Make sure you are updating the site that has S211 (Session 2, 2011) at the end. If you wish to remove the old sites from your list, please complete a Help! Request Support form, which is available from the staff Intranet on the right hand side under eLearning. Type in a request to remove the subjects, and then copy the old subject codes from your eLearning list and then paste them into the form (these subjects are not permanently deleted but are archived by ITS for a number of years).

A guide to eLearning, which addresses some of the common questions such as what to do if your subject code doesn’t appear (multi subject sites), and how to find an academic’s user name so that you can add them to your site. You might like to print and keep this a handy reference throughout the year.

Just a little note.... as it is the start of another academic semester this is a timely reminder that according to University policy and Australian Copyright Legislation that it is a violation to add pdf versions of journal articles, chapters of books, government reports, etc, to your eLearning space. Rather, these should be made available through the Library’s eReadings service and then linked to from your eLearning site.

If you wish to make such items available to your students, you have several options:
1. For freely available government reports provide a link to the document/s from your eLearning space
2. For journal articles, chapters of books, etc. these should be made available through the Library’s eReadings service. What happens when you invite the whole world to join an online class?

"As The Chronicle reported last year, a growing number of educators are giving that idea a try by offering free “massive open online courses,” or MOOC’s, to anyone who wants to learn. Today, that experimental idea gained some more traction in mainstream higher education. The University of Illinois at Springfield announced a new not-for-credit MOOC devoted to examining the state of online education and where e-learning is heading. Nearly 500 people from two dozen countries have registered so far, with 1,000 expected to sign up by the time the course begins next Monday.

These courses are part of a small but expanding push toward “open teaching.” Universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have offered free educational materials online for years, but the new breed of open teachers—at the University of Florida, Brigham Young University, and the University of Regina, among other places—is now giving away the learning experience, too."

In an age when universities’ core functions are under threat, the gadget offers a vision disconnected from the crumbling teaching and learning experiences in our libraries and classrooms."

Harsh words regarding teaching and learning, but a good prediction on how the iPad would develop to enhance academic life! The recent release of iPad 2 saw record sales to both staff and students. Apps and features continue to evolve. Trends such as eBooks have been a strong motivating factor for organisations to look at the technology. The University of Adelaide's Science Faculty illustrated this when moving hundreds of first year students to iPads this year. (1)

"When I heard a teacher tell me that they were creating recorded lectures for courses as homework assignments and spending classroom time on discussions and more active learning, I knew right then the value of the lecture capture tools.

Lecture capture technologies are not new to education. The enterprise solutions that exist are amazing and powerful. Tegrity, Echo 360, Sonic Foundry, Camtasia Relay, Wimba, and Elluminate have all had a hand in the market for some time and they all provide an opportunity for teachers to record content that students can access in a variety of formats and locations. Additionally, there are a number of free tools on the market that allow instructors to narrate anything on their computer screen are valuable tools in any classroom environment.

Changing classroom dynamics
One of the early epiphanies these tools provided was that students who missed a class could “make-up” the lecture and not fall behind. Additionally, students could review the lecture as many times as they needed to understand the material. Both of these scenarios are real and are truly useful to students. But I think that there is an even better use of the tools that I hope will have a larger impact on what happens in classrooms.

By capturing the lecture portions of classes and assigning them as homework, we can use class time to discuss the material and get any questions clarified. In hybrid courses this option is very appealing as it allows teachers and students to make the most of the time they have together to interact with the content in a way that a traditional lecture may not.

Teachers who teach multiple sections of a course in hybrid, fully online, and face-to-face environments may find the rewards of capturing lectures most beneficial. They can record the lectures given in their face-to-face class and use them as the homework or lecture portions of the online sections. Recordings of live classroom lectures often have a different feel to them than the ones that teachers record in their offices or at home, and typically require no additional work on behalf of the presenter."

"The latest report from web usability guru Jakob Nielsen is about iPad usability. It's the second such report fro"m Nielsen Norman Group and it features in-depth analysis about how people are using iPads. As is usual with Nielsen reports, it also lustily lists all the design flaws that his users found - such as touchable areas that are too small, low discoverability and "swipe ambiguity."......

"The report reiterates a common understanding about the iPad, that it's mostly for media consumption. Email is "the only slight exception to the rule." Specifically, the Nielsen participants reported using their iPads for games, checking email and social network sites, watching movies and videos, and reading news."

Researchers show off flexible PaperPhone

Researchers are set to present what they call an interactive flexible computer to a scientific conference on Tuesday, with the idea taking two forms: a 'PaperPhone' and a 'Snaplet' wristband computer.

The PaperPhone, pictured above, has a 3.7-inch flexible e-ink display. The researchers at the Queen's University Human Media Lab in Ontario worked with the E Ink Corporation, which provides the technology underpinning the screens of e-readers such as Amazon's Kindle, to develop the prototype computer.

According to the team, the flexibility of the display not only makes it easier to carry such devices in a pocket, but also allows for various new interactions with a smartphone. More .......

An experimental sociology subject at the University of Wollongong, which explores youth cultural and subcultural practices and styles. It also addresses how sociologists have made sense of youth cultures, and why they have paid so much attention to them.

Sociologists have asked things like: What does it mean to be a surfer, or a metalhead? What is the relationship between the way a genre of music sounds, and the way the fans of that genre dress? What is ‘coolness’? Is skating rebellious? Alongside questions like this, we’ll also ask: are the answers to these questions different now to how they were 30 years ago? If so, how, and why?

We’ll be investigating this area through mashing up a whole range of ABC archive material, on subcultures from beatniks to punk, with students’ own findings ‘in the field’. Student productions will be posted there, but we’re also using the space to talk among ourselves and with Poolies – to figure out how to make our films, and to discuss them once they’ve been uploaded. This is an exciting departure for us here at UOW – academically, we are nestled in a very exciting spot: after the sociology of culture, in the wide open space before you get to anthropological film, you’ll find us exploring. eLearning Forum Asia 2011

The Forum offers excellent opportunities for members of the educational community to come together to connect and share their user experiences and approaches in using technologies to improve teaching and learning at their workplace and institutions of learning. It also aims to gather more than 300 educators, technology specialists and vendors from Asia and beyond, to explore best practices and innovative ways to engage their technology-driven learners, and collaborate on innovative projects among researchers and elearning practitioners.

To draw focus on the increasing use of social learning applications and services in our learning environments, the conference main theme “Impact of Social Media and Web 2.0 in Teaching and Learning: Opportunities, Threats and Potentials” is intended to prompt educators to reflect and initiate discussions such as:

What are the potential benefits of using social technologies for education?
How are they aligned to existing best practices?
What pitfalls and threats should I avoid in using Web 2.0 for teaching and learning?

Come and join us for an exciting and meaningful time of learning, sharing and laughter as we prepare our learners and ourselves for the next part of our learning journeys. You will also embark on learning journeys to places of interest or institutions to explore their ICT-enriched learning environments and practical uses of technologies to learning.

The Forum is preceded by the inaugural 2011 Asia Pacific LAMS & Learning Design Conference on the 7th June at the same venue, including pre-conference workshops on the 6th June for the LAMS user community. Participants to both conferences will enjoy significant savings in travel and registration fees as compared to attending the events separately.

In this talk I discuss what will be coming 'After Moodle' by means of a discussion of open learning, connectivism, and personal learning environments, including the sharing of some of what we experienced in massive open online courses.
