UOW workshop: Academic Integrity 4 nov

Academic Integrity: A presentation and workshop with Jude Carroll (formerly of Oxford Brookes University)

It's a question of design:  How academic staff can ‘design in’ and ‘design out’ plagiarism and academic misconduct

Academic staff can influence the opportunities that students have for plagiarism and other types of academic misconduct by ‘designing in’ and ‘designing out’ these opportunities in the assessment tasks set for students.
The Presentation (09.30 am – 10.30 am Friday 4 November in 24.203)
This presentation
·       provides an overview and makes the case for a design-driven approach
·       demonstrates how it aligns with an holistic approach to student learning and assessment
·       outlines what current research and good practice experience demonstrates can be the impact of taking a ‘designing in and designing out’ approach in terms of the impact on student learning, teacher workload and institutional culture.

There will be time for questions from the audience.

The Workshop (10.30 am – 12.30 pm Friday 4 November in 24.203)
This workshop provides participants with the opportunity to consider a particular task, module, subject or course. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring with them an example that they would like to work on, or share. The workshop facilitator, Jude Carroll, will also provide examples of easy-to-fake assignments and guide participants on how they might go about ‘designing in and designing out’ to improve the assessment task. In addition Jude will
·       share hints and tips on how to undertake the ‘designing in, designing out’ approach
·       indicate what blocks teachers from taking the ‘designing in, designing out’ approach
·       tell the truth about skills development

RSVP June Aspley X4533 or by 2 November ‘11
